Glossy hosiery is legwear knitted with a light-reflecting finish, so the fabric returns light instead of absorbing it. IOO&SILK makes two glossy finishes: Aurora Gloss, a softer satin sheen, and Oil-Gloss, a stronger wet-look shine. Both are ultra-sheer (15D or less) with a stretch, second-skin fit.
This guide explains what makes hosiery glossy, how the two finishes compare, how denier changes the effect, and how to care for glossy tights so the shine lasts.
What Makes Hosiery Glossy?
Sheerness and shine are different properties. Denier controls how much light passes through the fabric; the finish controls how much light bounces off it. That is why two pairs of ultra-sheer stockings can read completely differently on the leg — same transparency, different finish.
Gloss comes from the fibre blend and the way the knit is finished. Our signature gloss treatments, Aurora Gloss and Oil-Gloss, are developed in-house and refined across hundreds of production samples before they reach the collection.
The Two IOO&SILK Gloss Finishes
Aurora Gloss — a Satin Sheen
Aurora Gloss is 80% nylon / 20% spandex with a high-gloss satin sheen. The reflection is soft and even rather than mirror-like, so it reads as polished rather than wet. It flatters the leg under dresses, skirts and lingerie sets, and sits comfortably in daylight where a stronger shine would look too dramatic.
Two Aurora styles to start with: the Aurora 0D Ultra-Sheer Glossy Thigh-High Stockings for a bare-leg effect with a satin gleam, and the Aurora 0D Seamless Lace-Trim Glossy Pantyhose if you prefer a seamless silhouette.
Oil-Gloss — a Wet-Look Shine
Oil-Gloss is an oil-sheen nylon-spandex blend of Nylon 80–95% / Spandex 5–20%, finished for a wet-look, light-reflecting surface. It is the stronger of the two finishes: the surface reflects light in a way that accentuates the curve of the leg, which is why it suits evening wear and low-light styling.
See it on the Artisan Oil-Shine Easy-Take-Off Pantyhose or the 0D Oil-Glossy Lace Mock Thigh-High Pantyhose.
Aurora Gloss vs Oil-Gloss: Side by Side
| Aurora Gloss | Oil-Gloss | |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | 80% nylon / 20% spandex | Nylon 80–95% / Spandex 5–20% |
| Finish | High-gloss satin sheen | Wet-look, light-reflecting oil sheen |
| Level of shine | Softer satin sheen | Stronger wet-look shine |
| Sheerness | Ultra-sheer (15D or less) | Ultra-sheer (15D or less) |
| Best for | Daylight polish, dresses, skirts, lingerie sets | Evening wear, low-light styling, statement looks |
Glossy vs Matte: Which Effect Do You Want?
Glossy and matte sit at opposite ends of the same dial. A glossy finish reflects light and highlights the shape of the leg. A matte finish scatters light instead, for an even surface with no sheen — our Matte High-Waist 0D Second-Skin Pantyhose is built for that effect.
Choose gloss when you want the leg to catch light and read as a deliberate part of the outfit. Choose matte when you want the hosiery to disappear into the look.
How Denier Affects Shine
Denier and shine work together. Denier is a unit of linear density — grams per 9,000 metres of yarn (Wikipedia). Lower denier means a finer yarn and more transparency, so the finish has less fabric to sit on. The collection runs across an ultra-sheer 0D to 5D range, with the Aurora 0D line as the lightest knit we make.
Because the finish matters as much as the number, a specialised Oil-Shine treatment can make a 10D stocking look more dramatic than a traditional 5D. If you want maximum transparency, start at the sheer end — the 5D Lace Oil-Sheen Pantyhose Stockings sit low in the range. If you want maximum reflection, choose an Oil-Gloss finish.

Styling Glossy Hosiery by Occasion
Everyday and office wear
Both finishes work for everyday polish. Aurora Gloss keeps the effect subtle under dresses and skirts, while Oil-Gloss is styled in our own product notes as a polished look for dresses, office outfits and eveningwear.
Evening and low light
Low light is where Oil-Gloss separates itself. The wet-look surface reflects ambient light and accentuates the line of the leg — the effect our styling notes pair with evening wear and Midnight Luxury aesthetics.
Lingerie and garter styling
Both finishes are available in suspender and garter styles. The Aurora Glossy Minimalist Thigh-High Garter Stockings suit a softer lingerie set, while the Black Lace Oil-Gloss Garter Stockings read as a stronger statement. For more on pairing them with a belt, see our suspender belt style guide.
Caring for Glossy Hosiery
The finish lives on the surface of a very fine knit, so handling matters as much as washing.
- Hand wash cold. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric.
- Dry flat, away from direct sunlight.
- Prepare hands and nails before dressing. Fine, ultra-sheer knits snag on rough edges.
- Store folded, not balled, so the knit is not stretched out of shape.
The full washing and storage routine is in our hosiery care guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Aurora Gloss and Oil-Gloss?
Aurora Gloss is 80% nylon / 20% spandex with a satin sheen. Oil-Gloss is an oil-sheen blend of Nylon 80–95% / Spandex 5–20% with a wet-look, light-reflecting finish.
Which finish is glossier?
Oil-Gloss has the stronger, wet-look shine. Aurora Gloss has a softer satin sheen.
Are glossy tights the same as shiny tights?
In practice, yes. Glossy, shiny, oil-sheen and wet-look all describe a knit that reflects light rather than absorbing it. IOO&SILK names the two variants Aurora Gloss and Oil-Gloss.
How sheer are glossy styles?
Our glossy styles are ultra-sheer — 15D or less — with a stretch, second-skin fit. If you are weighing up silhouettes, our comparison of thigh-high stockings vs pantyhose covers the difference.
What are glossy tights made of?
A nylon and spandex blend: 80% nylon / 20% spandex for Aurora Gloss, and Nylon 80–95% / Spandex 5–20% for Oil-Gloss. If you want the fibre science, Wikipedia covers nylon and spandex (elastane).
Do glossy tights work for daytime?
Yes. Aurora Gloss is the subtler choice for daylight. Oil-Gloss also reads as polished under dresses and office outfits, but its wet-look surface is most visible in low light.
How should I wash glossy hosiery?
Hand wash cold, avoid wringing, and dry flat away from direct sunlight.
Is glossy hosiery available in plus sizes?
Yes. The collection includes 24 plus-size styles — for example the Plus-Size Aurora Glossy Suspender Hosiery. Our plus-size fit guide and size guide explain how to find your size.
